1982 International designs and produces a new 6.9-liter, V-8 diesel engine for the Ford heavy pickup truck and van markets. This product introduction is the start of a strong relationship Ford and International to design and build powerful, durable diesel engines over-8,500-pound GVWR vehicles.
1989 International demonstrates a Smokeless Diesel Technology™ engine two years ahead of new EPA emissions regulations.
1994 International establishes a leadership position in diesel engine design and manufacturing with its emissions and performance technology by introducing the innovative electro-hydraulic based low-pressure common rail fuel delivery system. This technology provides drivers with faster cold starts, a smoother idle, excellent power response and a virtually smokeless exhaust. [photo: original Power Stroke® Diesel engine]

International introduces the 7.3-liter Power Stroke® Diesel engine for Ford applications, paving the way for broad acceptance of diesel-powered consumer pickups and SUVs. The Power Stroke® Diesel is the first North American diesel engine to include the low-pressure common rail fuel technology.

1997 Split-Shot™ fuel injection is introduced, improving engine cold starts, lowering noise and reducing emissions. The unique feature provides more precise two-stage delivery of diesel fuel to the combustion chamber.
1998 A long-term agreement is made with Ford Motor Company to supply high technology V-8 diesel engines through 2012 for over 8,500-pound GVW pickup trucks and vans.

The Indianapolis Engine Plant is selected as one of America’s Top 10 manufacturing facilities by Industry Week magazine.

1999 The Indianapolis plant produces its one millionth Power Stroke® Diesel V-8 diesel engine just five years after its introduction to the market, demonstrating the strong demand for International® diesel engines in Ford F-Series Super Duty pickup trucks.

International demonstrates its Green Diesel Technology® school bus outside the EPA’s hearings on proposed Tier 2 emissions standards for passenger vehicles and light trucks. The technology resulted in 50 percent lower particulate emissions than the best compressed-natural gas engine; overall, it reduced particulate emissions by more than 90 percent. 2000 Construction of a new engine manufacturing facility begins in Huntsville, Ala., positioning International for new products and new markets.
2001 International enters the NASCAR arena as the official sponsor of the Power Stroke® Diesel race truck in the NASCAR® Craftsman® Truck Series.
2002 The Indianapolis Engine Plant produces its two millionth Power Stroke® Diesel engine.

International evolves its electro-hydraulic low-pressure common rail fuel system and incorporates the improved technology into its new V-8 diesel engines. The new injectors are compact, leaving room to accommodate four valves per cylinder, and use higher injection pressure to increase performance and fuel economy while lowering emissions. The engine is also the first International V-8 to use the company's EVRT™ electronic turbocharger for improved throttle response and cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) for lower NOx emissions.
